CanSupport has been providing home based Palliative care to cancer patients since 1996 in Delhi/NCR.
Work and Achievements
CanSupport was set up in 1996 to fill a gap in public services. At that time, and to a large extent even today, people with life-limiting diseases like cancer, HIV, etc., battled alone. The burden of care fell squarely on the shoulders of the family.
Thanks to CanSupport’s efforts, today we have a Central palliative care policy and all district hospitals have been instructed to appoint and train palliative care experts. Oral morphine, the drug of choice for unremitting pain, is also more accessible due to amendment of the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act, thanks to lobbying by us and others.
CanSupport is 20 years old. It has maintained a healthy rate of growth. Beginning with 6 patients, today more than 1800 cancer patients and their families receive this care. Teams of specially trained doctors, nurses and counsellors visit patients living in the far corners of Delhi and the NCR. The service is free of charge. Our large number of committed donors and volunteers testify to the fact that CanSupport is an organisation that is appreciated and people want to support us. We are now helping state governments identify and train local health professionals so as to bring palliative care to the entire northern region. CanSupport has a model that is replicable and cost effective and which has been recognised as such by the WHO.
We use internationally validated indices and forms to measure the impact of what we do, namely, measuring pain in all its dimensions: physical and psycho-social.
