Promoting a human rights culture through human rights education in schools across the country.
Work and Achievements
The Institute of Human Rights Education (IHRE) is headquartered in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. It is one of the pioneering institutions for human rights education [HRE] in the country. It was set up with the vision of building a human rights culture in our society through education. Its objective is to build human rights culture in Indian society through HRE, as education is the most potent instrument for social transformation.
The program was confined to Tamil Nadu from 1997 to 2005, offered mainly in about 350 SC/ST schools run by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu and about 250private schools. Since, 2005 it has expanded to other states Odisha, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Tripura, Bihar, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, AP, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and UP and has commenced in all the NE states. By the end of 2011 academic session, the program covers 4,525 trained teachers in 3,909 schools involving 3, 15,494 children.
IHRE promotes and fosters a culture of respect for human rights; in which education is a tool for social change where students are “human rights ambassadors” who through their thoughts, words and deeds demonstrate that all humans irrespective of sex, gender, class, caste, race, colour and ethnicity are entitled to human rights based on the principles of dignity, equality and liberty because they are human. Its HRE is a part of the UN’s World Program on HRE Training.
