Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the body is unable to make adequate blood at the required pace. As a result, the patients usually children and young adults require blood transfusion every 14 days and treatment to remove excess iron deposits on the various internal organs. The only way to help these kids is to ensure that the children get timely and safe blood transfusions along with proper management of the disease. So far the cure for thalassemia is through a Bone marrow transplant which is an expensive treatment. Further there are practical difficulties in finding a matching marrow.
The NTWS has been working since 1992 towards the welfare of Thalassemia patients by creating awareness & screening before marriage or before planning for family to avoid this disorder being passed over to the next generation. There is a perpetual shortage of blood, hence finding a regular supply of safe blood for Thalassemic patients is very difficult. NTWS organizes regular blood donation drives all year round to help bridge the gap between demand and supply of blood. NTWS also raises funds to support underprivileged Thalassemia patients who cannot afford the expensive treatment. It costs anything between 1-2 lakhs per annum per child to merely manage the problem.
NTWS also holds regular free check up camps on the second Sunday of every month. Highly subsidised or free medicines are distributed to the thalassemic patients. Apart from regular BDC's, screening camps are also organized.
By running the ADHM this year, I have taken a pledge to raise Rs. 1 lac. To help support the welfare of Thalassemia patients through this CSO, I appeal to all of you to come forward and support the cause by donating from your heart. Your generous help will go a long way in giving a new lease of life to the kids and also in bringing a smile to their faces.
