Work and Achievements
Tamana, the NGO was founded by Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awardee Dr. Shayama Chona in 1984 and is named after her daughter who was born with cerebral palsy. The organization which started out of a shed with 4 students in 1984, today has hundreds of students between ages of 4 years - 35 years, enrolled in its three centres in Delhi.
Since the last three decades thousands of individuals with intellectual and multiple disabilities, and autism have availed and befitted from rehabilitative services of Tamana. A holistic and multi pronged program is developed for each beneficiary and includes special education, vocational training, therapeutic intervention, co curricular activities, opportunities for inclusive activities.
Other services provided include early intervention, outreach programmes, sheltered workshops, teacher training, formal education through National Open School, diagnostic centre and hostel facilities, recreational facility. Awareness generation through campaigns, social media, conferences, and exhibition are an important activity of the organization.
Tamana has aggressively pursued its admittedly ambitious plans. That is why it has many firsts to its credit, such as the concept of residential program, computer aided learning, sheltered workshops and a special school for autistic children. Tamana has developed matchless expertise in handling special individuals and developing them into happy independent, confident citizens, capable of serving the society and the nation by realizing their true potential.
Tamana’s contribution in the field of disability was recognized by the United Nations that granted it Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council. The organization received the National Award for Child welfare in 2006 by the Department of Women and Child Development, Govt. of India.
