Project Name : Converting Solid Wastes for Reclamation of Green Energy

The proposed project is envisaged to tackle the issue of solid waste management. The enormous quantity of waste generated in the city can provide solutions if treated through adopting appropriate technologies. A highly decentralized, people-powered model of waste management could reduce to extent of environmental hazards and can create jobs for waste pickers. The project will be implemented in Basanti slum, one of the major slum ranges where one third of Kolkata’s population live. With a rapid rate of urbanization, felling of trees, excessive emissions, unplanned stacking of garbage and public wastes etc. there has been an alarming rise in the levels of pollution in Kolkata, making it one of the most polluted cities. This proposal proposes recycling urban wastes to green energy through clean development mechanism with social inclusion of the urban poor population.
