Prajnya works for peace, justice and security by advancing women’s rights and participation, gender equity and freedom from gender violence. It also works with teachers, children and parents to build peace thinking into the classroom.
Work and Achievements
Prajnya is a non-profit centre working on women’s rights, gender violence and peace, through research, public education and networking. Our work is primarily volunteer driven, and we conduct public programmes, workshops and trainings on gender violence, and create information resources for distribution both online and offline. Recently, our work was recognised by the FICCI Ladies’ Organisation Chennai during their Women’s Day Awards.
When we started out, our main focus was to end the invisibility of women in public life. But we soon realised that this is not possible unless we end the silence around gender violence, particularly violence against women. So we created a platform – the Gender Violence Research and Information Taskforce (GRIT@Prajnya), where people could talk about the issue instead of brushing it under the carpet. In 2008, we conducted the first Prajnya 16 Days Campaign Against Gender Violence, which soon became our flagship event every year. During the campaign, we bring together the work we’ve done through the year, and create new platforms for taking the conversations to different groups of people.
Some of our year-round initiatives are:
- Community Café at housing societies, cultural centres and other communities
- Workshop on Gender Sensitisation and Gender Violence
- Street Sexual Harassment Workshop for College Students
- Domestic Violence Workshop for healthcare providers, beauticians etc
- Workplace Sexual Harassment training and policy formation for companies
