Work and Achievements

ActionAid India’s work on the ground to support women against patriarchal violence

Safe Spaces: We organize groups of both men and women, and also separate groups with different sections of the local population – children, adolescent girls, young women, youth and women. In the last few years ActionAid has created more than 600 village-level organizations with a combined membership of more than 56,000 – most of whom are women. More than 12,000 boys and men have participated in training workshops on women’s issues. More than 1,600 Gram Sabhas have passed resolutions seeking implementation of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act and committing themselves to fighting patriarchal violence.

Relief and support to survivors of patriarchal violence: The village and basti-based women’s organisations are the first to respond to and support survivors of patriarchal violence. They provide the very much-needed immediate emotional and psychological support. Over the years more than 11,000 cases of violence against women have been addressed through community mechanisms, and nearly 14,000 cases filed with the authorities. Working with relevant State Governments we support 22 One Stop Crisis Centres (OSCC) to ensure that medical relief, police assistance, legal support, pyscho-social counselling, shelter and linkage with long term rehabilitation support is provided in one convenient location.

Rehabilitation of survivors of violence: Over the years ActionAid has ensured that more than 6,000 single women received titles to farming land; we organized more than 430 collectives of women farmers and more than 120 collectives of fisherwomen. In urban areas we have organised more than 13,000 women in the informal economy into livelihood collectives with members ranging from ten to 25 and ensured that more than 7,800 women received skill training.
