Smile Train India
A children’s charity dedicated to providing free cleft lip and palate treatment across India, and empowering local doctors and hospitals to provide quality cleft care within their own communities.
Work and Achievements
Every year over 35,000 children are born with cleft lip and/or palate across India, and hundreds of thousands of children live with untreated clefts. Many lead a life of isolation but more importantly, have difficulty eating, breathing and speaking. Most of them do not go to school and seldom find jobs.
A 45-minute surgery can change all that.
Smile Train India provides free cleft surgeries and comprehensive cleft care to children in India. Since the year 2000, Smile Train’s sustainable model provides training, funding and resources to empower local doctors and hospitals across India to provide 100%-free cleft surgery and comprehensive cleft care in their own communities. Smile Train India credentials hospitals and surgeons who deliver safe, quality treatment to our patients. This ‘teach-a-man-to-fish’ model has enabled Smile Train India to provide 500,000+ surgeries in 18 years through 160+ partner hospitals.
The ‘secret’ of Smile Train’s productivity lies in the use of state-of-the-art information technology which manages programmes, monitors outcomes, trains doctors and tracks progress of patients. This keeps costs low, ensuring access to safe cleft surgeries for more children.
