Work and Achievements
We are a 39 year old voluntary women's organization founded in 1979 and working in West Bengal to improve lives of underprivileged women and children . Our objectives are achieved by working on projects relating to education, healthcare, environmental sustainability, violence & conflict resolution, economic empowerment with special focus on women’s welfare.
SI Calcutta was one of the first organisations to be actively involved in working for the women inmates of Alipore Women’s Correctional Home in the 1980s, and has conducted several projects for the benefit of inmates and their children. Other projects undertaken by us in the past include vocational training programmes for ayah/sevikas, improvement of life skills and counseling for slum dwellers .
Our present running projects include the following:
Conducting of free tutorial classes in English and Bengali for underprivileged children
Building of toilets for women in rural areas of West Bengal , and conducting of sanitary awareness programmes in rural areas with particular focus on women’s health
Programme to create awareness amongst young women about their legal rights
Vocational training in dressmaking/tailoring for teenaged girls, which is supported by Singer India Ltd
Inculcation of the spirit of sharing food with the poor & needy amongst school children , and providing food grains to organizations who conduct community food programmes for the underprivileged.
