We work with women survivors of violence, their children, schools and colleges, lawyers, judges, police, NGOs, community groups, other networks in Kolkata and surrounding districts.
Work and Achievements
Swayam is a feminist organisation committed to ending discrimination and all forms of violence against women and girls. On the one hand we facilitate the empowerment of women survivors of violence and enable them to become self-confident, self-sufficient and self-reliant. On the other, we generate discussion, debate and action in society to challenge social norms, values and systems that deem discrimination and violence against women and girls acceptable.
We provide Direct Support Services such as counselling, legal aid and advice, police follow up, vocational training, referrals for shelter and employment, a drop-in-centre and numerous group activities to promote creativity and positive mental health. In 2017-18 a total of 1,410 women, children and families were provided with support by Swayam.
Our Initiatives for Social Action and Change programme includes public education and awareness building, producing creative resources, disseminating information and sharing expertise, training and capacity building, networking with like-minded organisations/institutions for systemic change and intervening in urban and rural communities to build a violence free and gender just society. In 2017- 18, Swayam’s awareness programmes and campaign reached 682, 602 people, generating discussions on gender inequality, women’s rights and violence against women.
