Swayam is a non- profit feminist organisation working towards creating a non-discriminatory, violence- free and equal society.
We have been working for the last 23 years to advance women’s rights and facilitate their empowerment. In this past year (2016 – 2017), we have worked with over 1200 women survivors of violence and their families through counselling, legal aid and advice, police follow up, vocational training, referrals for shelter and employment, a drop-in-centre and numerous group activities to promote creativity, empowerment and positive mental health.
We also work with the larger society to address gender discrimination and challenge societal norms, traditions which leads to violence against women. In 2016-17, we reached out to over 3 lakh people from Kolkata and the neighbouring areas by way of awareness programmes, dissemination of information materials and social media communication. We have also worked intensively with over 3500 people from urban and rural communities to develop their understanding about gender-based issues and their role in ending violence against women and girls.
It is time to make a difference – I AM RUNNING THE 5KM KOLKATA MARATHON- Help me raise funds and awareness for Swayam to help us challenge gender based discrimination and the violence that women face everyday in their lives.
