CBM creates equity through disability inclusion in 26 states, touching 2 million people with disabilities.
Work and Achievements
CBM embarked on its journey of building inclusive communities in India in 1967. Over the last 50 years, CBM has worked towards improving the lives of people with disabilities and empowering them to exercise their rights to education and livelihood.
CBM believes that disability is a cause and consequence of poverty. Its efforts towards breaking the cycle of poverty and disability are upheld by three focus areas – Health, Education and Livelihood. Partnering with the government and 49 private institutions, CBM promotes affordable healthcare services, quality education, and sustainable livelihood for persons with disabilities.
CBM’s multi-pronged efforts towards building inclusion ensure a holistic development of persons with disabilities. Working with hospitals, CBM promotes affordable healthcare, improves the health conditions of people with disabilities, and prevents avoidable impairments. Children among them are then facilitated to receive quality education, which is accomplished through the capacity building of teachers from mainstream schools to tutor children with disabilities. CBM also develops its partner organisations to be resource centers for government schools to learn about accommodating children with disabilities into main stream educational institutions. Furthermore, adults with disabilities are encouraged to focus on creating viable livelihoods. This is achieved through offering them vocational training, promoting Self-Help Groups, providing start-up resources, and linking them with government financial institutions.
From one city in Kerala in 1967, CBM has spread to 26 states in India today.
Between 2008 and 2016, CBM reached out to over 32 million persons with disabilities, creating transformative changes in their lives and communities
