To grow a new generation of givers in India by telling stories to inspire empathy for the diverse causes being addressed by civil society organisations.
Work and Achievements
To facilitate individual giving, we have developed an online platform SmallChange.ngo on which we showcase non-profits, raise awareness of the causes they serve - and why - and help them raise funds.
Why is this important? The individual act of giving - and the motivation behind it - has been scientifically proven to bring joy and a sense of well- being for the giver as well as benefiting the receiver. If this is multiplied in the community and the larger population, we would eventually create a gentler, more humane, more empathic and equitable society.
Individual giving in India is largely limited to religious institutions and the destitute on the street, rarely extending to social welfare organisations, who are the backbone of development. We are working to change this – to make individual giving aspirational and a larger portion of the giving pie.
Since the platform was launched 18 months ago, we have raised over Rs.40 lakh for our NGO partners serving 18 different causes.
Ashif Shaikh, founder of Jan Sahas, says: "Through this platform excellent work is happening, helping civil society organisations address and fight issues ranging from education, nutrition, school enrolment, immunisation of slum kids, etc."
And Kolkata-based donor Arijit Seth, said: "We all want to help create a more equal world - but it's hard to know who you can trust. I'm grateful to Small Change - they've made it easier for me to donate without the fear of being ripped off."
